Process and tools
The UX Writing process can differ depending on the project and the company’s way of working, but it usually looks something like this.
Define and understand the task. What is the purpose? Talk to the stakeholders.
Gather user data. Map what I know about the users.
Map the information I need to give the user so that they can complete the task, or find the information they need.
Research. Conversation mining, word research, competitor analysis etc.
Write and doodle. Align with the brand tone and voice. I like to start writing in the mockups as early as possible. I also start to refine the copy.
User test. Is the flow and copy clear to the users? Do they understand what to do, or do they get stuck somewhere? Does the flow and the different steps work?
Iterate and refine.
Deliver.
Documentation. I document everything, from doodles to the final copy, and any terminology decisions I make.
In some companies, UX researchers gather the data, and in some, the UX designers do most of the defining of the task. As a UX Writer, I prefer to be involved in all the steps – but regardless of the company process, I do the research I need to get the information I need.
I am never happier than when I get involved at the start of the project and can co-design with the UX designers.
I mainly work in Figma.
